The Legend of Phanus

Phanus was the son of the god Dionysus and a mortal woman, making him a demigod of the Dionysian line.‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌ He came from the island of Crete and joined the crew of the Argo for the legendary voyage to Colchis. As a son of Dionysus, Phanus carried divine blood in his veins, though his connection was to the god of wine and revelry rather than the more martial deities. He and his brother Staphylus, whose name means grape cluster, both sailed with the Argonauts, representing Dionysus's presence in the great expedition. During the voyage, the sons of Dionysus contributed to crew morale and served as capable sailors. Their inclusion among the Argonauts demonstrates that the expedition drew heroes from every divine lineage in the Greek world.
