The Legend of Thessalus

Thessalus was a son of the great hero Heracles and is credited in tradition as the eponymous ancestor of Thessaly, the great plain of northern Greece that was home to many of the most famous heroes.‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌ After Heracles' death and ascension to Olympus, his sons were persecuted by King Eurystheus and scattered across Greece. Thessalus eventually made his way to the region that would bear his name, establishing a ruling line. His sons Antiphus and Pheidippos led the contingent from Cos to the Trojan War. Thessalus represents the important mythological tradition of connecting regions and peoples to heroic founders. The Thessalians claimed descent from Heracles through him, adding divine prestige to their already formidable military reputation as the finest cavalry and warriors in Greece.
