The Myth of Pegazos

Pegasus burst from Medusa's neck at the moment of her death, fully formed and already winged.‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌ He did not serve Perseus — despite his origin — but flew free. He was later captured by the hero Bellerophon at the spring of Pirene in Corinth, using a golden bridle given by Athena. Riding Pegasus, Bellerophon defeated the Chimera, the Amazons, and the Solymi. Proud with success, Bellerophon attempted to fly Pegasus to Olympus itself; Zeus sent a gadfly to sting the horse, Bellerophon was thrown off and fell to earth lame and wandering. Pegasus continued to Olympus, where he carried Zeus' thunderbolts. Eventually he was placed among the stars as a constellation. A hoof-strike at Helicon created the spring Hippocrene, sacred to the Muses.
