Arion

Speed, divinity

Supernaturally fast divine horse born from Poseidon and Demeter, later ridden by the hero Adrastus‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌

The Myth of Arion

Arion was a divine horse of extraordinary speed, born under remarkable circumstances.‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌ When Demeter was searching for her abducted daughter Persephone, she tried to escape the advances of Poseidon by transforming herself into a mare and hiding among the herds of King Oncius in Arcadia. Poseidon saw through the disguise, transformed himself into a stallion, and mated with her. From this union was born Arion, a horse with the right feet of a man according to some traditions, and the ability to speak. Arion passed through several owners, eventually coming to the hero Adrastus, king of Argos. During the disastrous expedition of the Seven Against Thebes, when all seven champions were killed or destroyed, Adrastus alone escaped death because Arion's incomparable speed carried him to safety. The horse thus saved the one leader needed to raise the second expedition.
