The Myth of Pegasus

Pegasus was the winged horse who sprang from the neck of the Gorgon Medusa when Perseus beheaded her, born alongside the warrior Chrysaor from her mingled blood and the seed of Poseidon.‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌ Pegasus flew to Mount Helicon, where his hoof-strike created the Hippocrene spring sacred to the Muses. The hero Bellerophon sought to tame Pegasus to fight the Chimaera, the fire-breathing monster terrorising Lycia. Athena appeared to Bellerophon in a dream and gave him a golden bridle. With this divine gift he found Pegasus drinking at the spring of Pirene in Corinth and bridled him. Mounted on Pegasus, Bellerophon flew above the Chimaera and drove a lead-tipped spear into its throat, the fire melting the lead and choking the beast. After further victories, Bellerophon attempted to fly to Olympus itself, but Zeus sent a gadfly that stung Pegasus, throwing the rider to earth. Pegasus continued to Olympus and became a constellation.
