Prothoenor
One of the five Boeotian commanders at Troy who was killed by the Trojan hero Polydamas
The Legend of Prothoenor
Prothoenor was one of five leaders who commanded the Boeotian contingent at Troy, the largest single force in the Greek army at fifty ships. He shared command with Peneleos, Leitus, Arcesilaos, and Clonius. The Boeotians were a numerous and powerful people from the fertile heartland of central Greece, and their massive contribution to the fleet reflected their importance. During the fierce fighting near the Greek ships, Prothoenor was killed by Polydamas, one of the most skilled Trojan warriors and a close advisor to Hector. Polydamas hurled his spear and struck Prothoenor in the shoulder, and the Boeotian commander fell from the rampart. His death provoked taunting from Polydamas and a furious Greek response, intensifying the battle around the ships.
