Epistrophus
Co-commander of the Phocian forces at Troy who shared leadership with his kinsman Schedius
The Legend of Epistrophus
Epistrophus was the son of Iphitus and co-commander of the Phocian contingent alongside his brother or kinsman Schedius. Together they led forty ships from Phocis to join the Greek expedition against Troy. The Phocians were known as hardy mountain warriors, and their dual leadership reflected the tradition of shared command among closely related heroes. Epistrophus fought throughout the long siege of Troy, participating in the major battles described in the Iliad. After Schedius was killed by Hector, the burden of sole command fell upon Epistrophus. He continued to lead the Phocians through the remainder of the war. The name Epistrophus, meaning one who turns back, was borne by multiple figures in the Trojan War tradition, including a Trojan ally from Halizonia.
