Clonius
One of the five Boeotian commanders at Troy who was among the first leaders killed in the war
The Legend of Clonius
Clonius was one of the five commanders of the Boeotian forces that sailed to Troy, sharing leadership with Peneleos, Leitus, Arcesilaos, and Prothoenor. The name Clonius suggests tumult or confusion of battle, fitting for a warrior who led the largest contingent in the Greek fleet. He commanded his portion of the fifty Boeotian ships and fought in the early engagements of the siege. Clonius was killed by the Trojan warrior Agenor, who struck him with a spear during the fighting. His death was one of the earliest leadership losses among the Greek commanders, weakening the Boeotian high command. The gradual attrition of the Boeotian leaders throughout the Iliad underscores the terrible cost of the war on the Greek side's command structure.
