Arcesilaos
One of the five Boeotian commanders at Troy who was killed by Hector during the fighting
The Legend of Arcesilaos
Arcesilaos was one of the five leaders of the Boeotian contingent that sailed to Troy, sharing command with Peneleos, Leitus, Prothoenor, and Clonius. The Boeotian forces were the largest in the Greek fleet, a testament to the region's population and military strength. Arcesilaos led his portion of the Boeotian warriors through the siege and participated in the major engagements. He was killed by Hector during the intense fighting that raged when the Trojans pushed the Greeks back to their ships. His death was one of many leadership losses that weakened the Boeotian command structure during the war. The name Arcesilaos, meaning leader of the people, was later famously borne by several kings of Cyrene, though they were not directly connected to this Homeric commander.
