Pisander
Commander of one of the five Myrmidon divisions who served under Achilles at Troy
The Legend of Pisander
Pisander was a Greek warrior and one of the five commanders of the Myrmidon divisions under Achilles during the Trojan War. He was the son of Maimalos and was considered the finest spearman among the Myrmidons after Patroclus. Homer specifically praises his skill with the spear, marking him as an elite fighter even among Achilles' handpicked warriors. The Myrmidons were the most feared fighting force in the Greek army, and their five division commanders were chosen for exceptional ability. When Patroclus led the Myrmidons into battle, Pisander commanded his division with distinction. The name Pisander also belongs to a Trojan warrior killed by Agamemnon, and to an ancient epic poet, but the Myrmidon commander is the most prominent military figure bearing the name.
