The Legend of Podes

Podes was a son of Eetion and one of the wealthiest and most respected noblemen in Troy.‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌ He was a particularly close friend and table companion of Hector, who valued him greatly for his generous hospitality and loyal counsel. Podes was not primarily a front-line warrior, but he fought when called upon during the desperate battles around the Greek ships. During the fierce fighting that followed Patroclus's rampage through the Trojan ranks, Menelaus spotted Podes on the battlefield and hurled his spear, striking him fatally. Hector was deeply grieved by the death of his friend, and the loss spurred him to fight with renewed fury. Podes' death illustrates how the war consumed not just warriors but Troy's entire social fabric.
