Bathycles
Greek or Trojan warrior known for his family's wealth who died in the fighting at Troy
The Legend of Bathycles
Bathycles was a warrior who fought during the Trojan War, noted in Homer's account for coming from a wealthy family. His father was a man of considerable means in his homeland, and Bathycles grew up in prosperity before marching to war. During the fierce fighting around Troy, Bathycles was killed by Glaucus, the Lycian ally of the Trojans. Glaucus turned suddenly upon Bathycles as he was pursuing him and struck him down with a spear thrust through the chest. Bathycles fell with a crash, and his death caused grief among the Greeks while the Trojans rallied around Glaucus. His death is one of many Homer uses to show that wealth and privilege offered no protection on the battlefield.
