Menelaus

hero
Μενέλαος
King of Sparta, husband of Helen

Menelaus was the king of Sparta whose stolen wife Helen was the cause of the Trojan War — yet he survived the war, the return, and old age, a rare happy ending among Greek heroes.

The Myth

Menelaus won Helen through the suitors' oath. When Paris took her, Menelaus and Agamemnon assembled the Greek alliance. At Troy, Menelaus fought Paris in single combat but Aphrodite spirited Paris away. After the war, Menelaus intended to kill Helen but was disarmed by her beauty. They wandered to Egypt before returning to Sparta, where they lived prosperously. He was promised Elysium — not for virtue but because he was Zeus's son-in-law.
