The Legend of Erymas

Erymas was a Trojan warrior who fought in the defence of his city during the Greek siege.‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌ He appears in Homer's Iliad among the casualties of the prolonged fighting that took place across the plain of Troy. Erymas was killed during the battle, struck down by a Greek warrior in the fierce combat that characterised the war. Homer records his death alongside those of many other Trojan fighters, building a cumulative picture of the devastating losses suffered by the defenders. The name Erymas suggests a connection to the Greek word for defence or bulwark, appropriate for a man who died defending his city. His brief appearance in the epic is typical of the many named warriors whose deaths Homer memorialises.
