The Legend of Aretus

Aretus was a Trojan warrior who fought in the defence of his city during the long war with the Greeks.‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍ He appears in the Iliad among those who clashed with the Greek champions during the furious battles that raged across the plain of Troy. Aretus engaged the enemy with courage, but like many Trojan fighters he met his end on the battlefield. He was killed by Automedon, the charioteer of Achilles, who had taken up arms to fight on foot. Automedon drove his spear through Aretus's belly, and the Trojan fell forward onto the weapon. His death was one of many that marked the devastating toll of the war on Troy's fighting men.
