Amythaon
Thessalian prince and father of the great seer Melampus, founder of a celebrated prophetic dynasty
The Legend of Amythaon
Amythaon was a son of Cretheus and Tyro, making him a brother of Aeson and Pheres, and thus uncle to Jason of the Argonauts. He migrated from Thessaly to Messenia in the Peloponnese, where he settled in the town of Pylos during the reign of Neleus. Amythaon married Idomene and fathered two sons who would become far more famous than himself: Melampus, the first mortal to possess the gift of prophecy and the art of healing, and Bias, a renowned warrior. Through Melampus, Amythaon became the patriarch of one of the most important prophetic dynasties in Greek mythology. His grandsons and great-grandsons continued the seer lineage for generations, and the house of Melampus played crucial roles in the myths of Argos, Thebes, and the Trojan War.
