Jason
heroThe hero who assembled the Argonauts and sailed to Colchis in quest of the Golden Fleece. Jason's story is one of ambition, adventure, and tragic betrayal.
The Myth
Jason was the rightful heir to the throne of Iolcos, but his uncle Pelias had seized power. When Jason came to claim his birthright, Pelias set him an impossible task: bring back the Golden Fleece from the distant land of Colchis.
Jason built the great ship Argo and assembled the finest heroes in Greece — Heracles, Orpheus, Castor and Pollux, Atalanta, and many others. The Argonauts faced countless perils on their voyage: the Clashing Rocks, the harpies, and the bronze giant Talos. When they reached Colchis, King Aeetes set impossible challenges.
But the king's daughter, the sorceress Medea, fell in love with Jason and used her magic to help him yoke fire-breathing bulls, sow dragon's teeth, and steal the Fleece from the sleepless dragon that guarded it. Jason returned triumphant, but his later betrayal of Medea — abandoning her for a younger princess — brought terrible consequences. Medea killed their children in revenge, and Jason died alone, crushed by a timber from the rotting Argo.
