The Legend of Melampus

Melampus was the son of Amythaon and the brother of Bias.‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍ He became the first mortal to possess the gift of prophecy and the first to practise medicine, establish the cult of Dionysus in Greece, and understand the language of animals. His prophetic gift came through a remarkable event: when servants killed a pair of serpents near his home, young Melampus gave the snakes a proper burial. In gratitude, their offspring licked his ears as he slept, and when he awoke he could understand the speech of birds and creatures. From the animals he learned secrets hidden from mortals, including the art of divination. Melampus used his gifts to help his brother Bias win the hand of Pero, daughter of Neleus. Neleus demanded the cattle of Phylacus as a bride-price, and Melampus undertook to steal them, though he foresaw he would be imprisoned for a year. Through his prophetic knowledge, he secured his release, obtained the cattle, and won Pero for his brother. Later, Melampus cured the women of Argos of Dionysiac madness and received a third of the kingdom as payment. His prophetic lineage continued through his descendants for generations.
