Amphilochus

🗡 heroἈμφίλοχος
prophecy, colonization

Seer and hero who founded oracle sites across the eastern Mediterranean after the Trojan War.‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍

The Legend of Amphilochus

Son of Amphiaraus the seer, Amphilochus fought at Troy alongside Ajax, Odysseus, and the other Greek captains.‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍ After the war he wandered the Mediterranean founding oracular shrines. He and Mopsus quarrelled over the oracle at Mallus in Cilicia and killed each other in single combat. Like his father, Amphilochus received posthumous worship — Apollo granted both father and son oracular power. His story bridges the Theban cycle of Oedipus and Polynices with the post-Troy wanderings that scattered heroes from Ithaca to the edges of the known world.
