The Legend of Oebalus

Oebalus was a king of Sparta, said to be the son of Cynortas and the father (with the nymph Bateia or with Gorgophone) of Tyndareus, Hippocoon, and Icarius.‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍ He thus stands as the ancestor of Tyndareus's family, which by marriage or divine intervention produced Castor, Polydeuces, Helen, and Clytemnestra — nearly the entire cast of the Trojan War cycle. In some traditions he married Gorgophone, daughter of Perseus, which connects the two great heroic dynasties, Perseid and Tyndareid, through his bloodline. Oebalus himself performs no notable deeds; he belongs to the genealogical scaffolding of Spartan royal tradition, present primarily to explain how Tyndareus's family connects to earlier Peloponnesian history. Later writers used "Oebalid" as a poetic epithet for Spartans or members of the Laconian royal house.
