The Legend of Canthus

Canthus was a Greek hero from Euboea who joined the crew of the Argo for the voyage to Colchis.‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌ He was the son of Canethus and a loyal member of the expedition throughout its many trials. Canthus survived the outward journey to Colchis, the seizure of the Golden Fleece, and the perilous return voyage through unknown waters. However, his fate caught up with him in an unexpected place. When the Argo was stranded in the deserts of Libya, the crew's cattle were stolen by local herdsmen. Canthus went in pursuit of the stolen animals, determined to recover them. He tracked the thieves to the territory of the Libyan king Caphaurus, who killed him with a spear. His companion Eribotes recovered his body and the Argonauts buried him on the Libyan shore with full honours.
