The Legend of Areithous

Areithous was a famous warrior from the Arcadian city of Arne, renowned throughout Greece for his unusual choice of weapon: an iron mace or club, which earned him the epithet the Mace-Bearer.‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌ He was a formidable combatant who defeated many opponents with this blunt weapon in an age when most warriors fought with bronze spears and swords. His reign of battlefield dominance ended when he was ambushed and killed by Lycurgus the Arcadian in a narrow pass where his great club was useless. Lycurgus defeated him not through superior strength but through cunning, choosing terrain that negated the club's advantage. Lycurgus then wore Areithous's armour in battle. In the Iliad, Menesthius, the son of Areithous, fights at Troy, carrying on his father's martial legacy among the Greek forces.
