Menesthius
Son of the river god Spercheius who commanded one of the five Myrmidon divisions at Troy
The Legend of Menesthius
Menesthius was the son of the river god Spercheius and Polydora, daughter of Peleus, making him a nephew of Achilles. His divine river parentage and royal Myrmidon blood made him a natural choice for command. He was appointed one of the five leaders of the Myrmidon divisions that served under Achilles at Troy. Some traditions say his actual father was a mortal named Borus who married Polydora, but that Spercheius was his divine father. Menesthius led his Myrmidon warriors with the authority of his lineage and his own martial prowess. When Patroclus took the Myrmidons into battle, Menesthius's division was among those that smashed into the Trojan lines. His connection to the river Spercheius, which flowed through the Myrmidon homeland, symbolised the deep roots binding the Myrmidons to their Thessalian territory.
