The Legend of Archeptolemus

Archeptolemus was a son of Iphitus and served as charioteer to Hector, the greatest of the Trojan warriors.‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍ Driving Hector's war chariot was one of the most prestigious and dangerous roles in the Trojan army, requiring both supreme skill with horses and courage under fire. During the fierce fighting around the Greek ships, when Hector was pressing the assault against the Greek defences, Teucer the Salaminian archer took aim at the Trojan prince. His arrow missed Hector but struck Archeptolemus in the chest as he held the reins, killing him instantly. He tumbled from the chariot and the horses shied in terror. Hector, grieving but undaunted, immediately called upon Cebriones to take up the reins and continue the assault. Archeptolemus's death is recorded in Book Eight of the Iliad.
