The Myth of Agaue

Agaue was listed by Hesiod among the Nereids in the Theogony, and her name means "illustrious" or "n‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌oble." She personified the grandeur and magnificence of the sea — those moments when the ocean appears majestic rather than merely dangerous. Her name is shared with the more famous Agave, mother of Pentheus in the Dionysiac myths, but the Nereid Agaue is a distinct figure. The Nereids collectively represented the sea's many faces, and Agaue embodied its capacity for awe-inspiring beauty. She appears in various ancient catalogues of sea nymphs and was depicted in art as part of the retinue that accompanied Poseidon and Amphitrite across the waves.
