Ianeira
Nereid sea nymph whose name means "she who enchants men," personifying the alluring fascination of the sea
The Myth of Ianeira
Ianeira was listed by Hesiod among the Nereids, and her name likely means "she who enchants or delights men," from the root ianein (to delight or warm). She personified the sea's seductive, captivating quality — the way the ocean draws people to gaze at it, to sail upon it, to build their lives around it despite its dangers. The Greek relationship with the sea was one of fascination as much as fear, and Ianeira embodied that pull. She appears in Homer's Iliad (XVIII.47) among the Nereids who gather to mourn with Thetis over Achilles's grief, one of the most memorable scenes of collective female sorrow in ancient literature.
