Proto

🌿 nymphΠρωτώ
Primacy, first things, the primal sea

Nereid sea nymph whose name means "the first," possibly the eldest or most prominent of the Nereids‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍

The Myth of Proto

Proto was numbered among the Nereids by Hesiod, and her name straightforwardly means "the first." Wh‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍ether this implies she was considered the eldest of the fifty sisters, the foremost in rank, or simply the first quality of the sea to be personified remains uncertain. Her name shares its root with words like protos (first) and Proteus, the shape-shifting old man of the sea who was sometimes conflated with her father Nereus. Proto represents the primordial aspect of the ocean — the sea as it was before ships sailed upon it, ancient and original. She appears in several ancient catalogues of Nereids and was depicted in classical art as part of the marine retinue.
