The Legend of Pentheus

Pentheus was the son of Echion and Agave, and grandson of Cadmus.‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌ He inherited the throne of Thebes and ruled with rigid authority. When Dionysus arrived in Thebes to establish his worship, Pentheus refused to recognise him as a god, calling him a charlatan and imprisoning his followers. Dionysus, in disguise, manipulated Pentheus by appealing to his curiosity and hidden desires, persuading him to dress as a woman and spy on the Bacchic rituals on Mount Cithaeron. There, the frenzied Maenads — led by his own mother Agave — mistook him for a wild animal and tore him limb from limb. Agave carried her son's head back to Thebes, believing it was a lion's.
