Maera

Sparkle, shimmering light on water

Nereid sea nymph whose name means "the sparkling one," associated with the glittering play of light ‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌on the sea

The Myth of Maera

Maera was numbered among Hesiod's Nereids, and her name is connected to marmairo, meaning "to sparkl‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌e" or "to flash." She personified one of the most beautiful aspects of the sea — the way sunlight or moonlight dances across the surface of the water, creating a shimmering, constantly shifting pattern of light. This sparkling quality of the sea fascinated ancient observers and was frequently described in Greek poetry. The name Maera appears elsewhere in myth for a faithful dog placed among the stars, and for a priestess of Artemis, but the Nereid Maera is a distinct figure embodying the radiant, luminous quality of the ocean surface.
