Dynamene

🌿 nymphΔυναμένη
Sea power, strength of waves

Nereid sea nymph whose name means "she who has power," personifying the mighty force of ocean waves‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌

The Myth of Dynamene

Dynamene was listed by Hesiod among the Nereids, and her name derives from dynamis, the Greek word for power and force.‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌ She personified the raw strength of the sea — the crushing power of storm waves, the relentless erosive force of tides, the sheer might of water in motion. Apollodorus includes her in his catalogue of Nereids, and she appears in various literary and artistic depictions of the marine retinue. Her name lives on in modern scientific vocabulary: "dynamic," "dynamo," and "dynamite" all derive from the same root. For the Greeks, the power of the sea was something to be respected and feared, and Dynamene gave that awesome force a name and a face.
