The Myth of Panopea

Panopea (also Panope) was one of the fifty Nereids listed by Hesiod in the Theogony.‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍ Her name, meaning "all-seeing" or "she who sees everything," made her particularly appropriate as a protector of sailors who needed every danger spotted in advance. Virgil invokes her in the Aeneid when describing the Nereids who help Aeneas's ships, and she appears in Roman poetry as one of the benevolent sea-spirits who could be called upon in distress. The Nereids collectively were the calm-sea counterpart to the stormy Poseidon: when the sea was gentle and navigable, it was because the Nereids, including Panopea, were favourably disposed. Her "all-seeing" quality connected her to the practical need for watchfulness at sea — reading weather, currents, and hazards was a matter of survival in ancient Mediterranean sailing. Pliny the Elder mentions Panopea among the Nereids, and she appears in Apollonius of Rhodes's Argonautica when the Nereids guide the Argo past the Wandering Rocks.
