The Myth of Cymatolege

Cymatolege was listed among Hesiod's Nereids, and her name combines kyma (wave) with legein (to lay to rest or calm).‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌ She was "the one who stills the waves" — a deeply meaningful figure for any seafaring culture. She personified that blessed moment when a storm subsides, when the heaving sea gradually flattens, when sailors can finally release their grip on the rigging and breathe again. The calming of the sea was understood as a divine act, and Cymatolege gave that act a name. She represents the benevolent, protective aspect of the Nereids — these were daughters of the wise, gentle Nereus, and they generally wished humans well upon their father's domain.
