The Myth of Pronoe

Pronoe was listed among Hesiod's fifty Nereids, and her name means "forethought" or "providence," from pro (before) and noos (mind).‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌ She personified the forward-thinking, planful quality essential to maritime life. Every voyage required forethought: provisioning the ship, reading weather signs, planning the route, knowing where to shelter if storms arose. Pronoe gave divine form to this crucial skill. Her name is the feminine equivalent of the concept embodied by Prometheus (whose name also means "forethought"), though on a maritime rather than cosmic scale. The contrast with Prometheus is instructive: where he brought forethought to all humanity, Pronoe brought it specifically to those who went down to the sea.
