First counsel, foresight at sea

Nereid sea nymph whose name means "first in counsel," associated with wise guidance for seafarers‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌

The Myth of Protomedeia

Protomedeia was numbered among Hesiod's Nereids, and her compound name combines protos (first) with medeia (counsel or planning).‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌ She personified the forethought and planning essential to safe seafaring — the wise counsel that a captain needed before setting out. In a world without weather forecasts or GPS, the decision of when and how to sail was a matter of life and death, requiring deep knowledge of winds, currents, stars, and seasonal patterns. Protomedeia represented this accumulated maritime wisdom. Her father Nereus was known as the "Old Man of the Sea" and was himself associated with wise counsel and truthfulness, making her a fitting inheritor of his character.
