Good harbours, safe anchorage

Nereid sea nymph whose name means "she of the good harbour," protector of safe anchorage‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍

The Myth of Eulimene

Eulimene appears in Hesiod's Theogony among the fifty daughters of Nereus.‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ Her name combines eu (good) and limen (harbour), making her the divine patroness of safe anchorage. For ancient Greek sailors, finding a good harbour could mean the difference between life and death — harbours offered shelter from storms, safe beaching for ships, and fresh water. Eulimene personified that blessed relief of reaching safe port after a dangerous voyage. Greek harbours were often sacred spaces with shrines to sea deities, and the Nereids as a group were honoured in coastal sanctuaries. Her name reflects the intensely practical nature of Greek maritime religion, where divine figures mapped directly onto the realities of seafaring life.
