Carrying, transport by sea

Nereid sea nymph whose name means "she who carries," representing the sea's power to transport ships‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌ and goods

The Myth of Pherusa

Pherusa was one of Hesiod's fifty Nereids, and her name comes from the verb pherein, "to carry." She‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌ personified one of the sea's most essential functions for Greek civilisation: its ability to carry ships, goods, people, and ideas across vast distances. The Mediterranean was the great highway of the ancient world, and Pherusa embodied the benevolent carrying power that made trade and colonisation possible. Without the sea's willingness to bear ships upon its surface, Greek civilisation as it existed could not have developed. Her name connects to a vast family of Indo-European words — the English "bear" (to carry), Latin ferre, and Sanskrit bharati all share her root.
