The Myth of Nemertes

Nemertes was listed by Hesiod among the fifty Nereids, and her name means "unerring" or "infallible.‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌" She personified truthfulness and accuracy — qualities inherited from her father Nereus, whom Hesiod specifically praises as truthful and unerring. In a world where the sea was full of deceptions — mirages, hidden rocks, deceptive currents — a divine figure representing reliability was deeply meaningful. Nemertes embodied the trustworthy aspects of the sea: predictable tides, reliable winds, honest depths. She also represented the Nereids' inherited character from their father, the truthful old man of the sea who never lied. Hesiod places her last in his catalogue, possibly giving her an emphatic final position.
