Honesty, freedom from falsehood

The Myth of Apseudes

Apseudes appears in Hesiod's Theogony among the Nereids, and her name combines the negative prefix a‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌- with pseudos (falsehood), making her "the one without lies." Like Nemertes, she personified the honest, truthful character that Hesiod explicitly attributes to their father Nereus. The pairing of these two truth-related Nereids is significant — it suggests that the Greeks considered honesty a fundamental quality of the sea, or at least of the wise old sea god and his daughters. In a maritime culture where accurate information about weather, currents, and routes could save lives, truthfulness was not merely a moral virtue but a survival necessity.
