The Myth of Galene

Galene was one of Hesiod's fifty Nereids, and her name simply means "calm" — the flat, glassy, tranquil sea that every ancient sailor prayed for.‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍ She was perhaps the most welcome of all the Nereids to encounter, for a calm sea meant safe passage. The Greek word galene specifically described the smooth, mirror-like surface of the sea on a windless day, when you could see your reflection in the water. Nonnus describes her in the Dionysiaca as a beautiful figure associated with the most peaceful aspect of Poseidon's realm. The name has been adopted in modern pharmacology — "galenic" preparations refer to simple, calm formulations. She represents the sea at its most benign and beautiful.
