Galene
Nereid sea nymph whose name means "calm" or "serenity," personifying the blessed stillness of calm seas
The Myth of Galene
Galene was one of Hesiod's fifty Nereids, and her name simply means "calm" — the flat, glassy, tranquil sea that every ancient sailor prayed for. She was perhaps the most welcome of all the Nereids to encounter, for a calm sea meant safe passage. The Greek word galene specifically described the smooth, mirror-like surface of the sea on a windless day, when you could see your reflection in the water. Nonnus describes her in the Dionysiaca as a beautiful figure associated with the most peaceful aspect of Poseidon's realm. The name has been adopted in modern pharmacology — "galenic" preparations refer to simple, calm formulations. She represents the sea at its most benign and beautiful.
