The Myth of Ianassa

Ianassa appears in Hesiod's Theogony among the fifty Nereids, and her name is related to the verb ianein, meaning to heal, soothe, or warm.‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍ She personified the therapeutic, restorative quality of the sea — its ability to heal wounds, soothe troubled minds, and restore vitality. Ancient Greeks recognised the health benefits of sea bathing and salt air, and coastal sanctuaries often combined worship of sea deities with healing practices. Ianassa gave divine form to this belief that the sea could cure. Her name also appears in Homer's Iliad among the Nereids who attend Thetis. The connection between the sea and healing remained strong throughout antiquity.
