The Myth of Amatheia

Amatheia was one of Hesiod's fifty Nereids, and her name derives from amathos, meaning "sand." She p‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌ersonified the sandy aspect of the sea — the beaches, the shifting sandbars, the soft ocean floor where sand ripples beneath clear water. Sand was a fundamental part of the Greek experience of the sea: beaches were where ships were hauled ashore, where fishermen dried their nets, and where children played. The shifting, flowing nature of sand made it a natural part of the sea's domain. Amatheia should not be confused with Amaltheia, the goat or nymph who nursed the infant Zeus, though the names are sometimes conflated. Several ancient coastal towns bore the related name Amathus.
