The Myth of Eudore

Eudore was one of Hesiod's fifty Nereids, and her name combines eu (good) with doron (gift).‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌ She was "the good gift" or "the generous giver," personifying the sea's bounty — its endless provision of fish, sponges, coral, murex dye, salt, and the trade goods that crossed its surface. The sea was the greatest gift-giver in the Greek world, providing food, livelihood, and the connections that made civilisation possible. Eudore gave this generosity divine form. A different Eudore appears elsewhere in myth as a companion of Artemis. The Nereid Eudore represents the culmination of the benevolent Nereid concept — these daughters of kindly Nereus wished well to humanity and gave freely from their father's domain.
