The Myth of Glauconome

Glauconome was one of Hesiod's fifty Nereids, and her name combines glaukos (blue-green, gleaming) with nomos (dwelling or pasture).‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍ She was "she who inhabits the blue-green water." The Greek word glaukos is fascinating — it described a colour somewhere between blue, green, and grey, the shifting colour of the sea itself, and also carried connotations of gleaming or brightness. It was the colour of Athena's eyes and the sheen on olive leaves. Glauconome personified the visual beauty of the sea's colour, that distinctive Mediterranean blue-green that ancient writers found so captivating. The word "glaucoma" derives from the same root, referring to the blue-grey film over the eye.
