The Myth of Nesaea

Nesaea appears in Hesiod's catalogue of Nereids, and her name derives from nesos, the Greek word for island.‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌ She personified the intimate relationship between islands and the sea that surrounded them — the Aegean, with its hundreds of islands, was the quintessential landscape of Greek maritime life. Every island was encircled by the Nereids' domain, and Nesaea represented this embrace. Virgil mentions her in the Aeneid alongside other Nereids, and she appears in various ancient lists of sea nymphs. The Greek island world was a place where land and sea intermingled constantly, and Nesaea embodied that intermingling — she was the sea as it touches the shore of each island.
