The Myth of Polynome

Polynome appears in Hesiod's catalogue of Nereids, and her name combines polys (many) with nomos (pasture, law, or custom).‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌ She may have personified the vast diversity of the sea's "pastures" — its many different habitats, currents, and regions — or the many customs and laws that governed seafaring life. The sea was not one uniform expanse to the Greeks; it was a patchwork of named waters, each with distinct characters, hazards, and moods. Polynome represented this multiplicity. Her name is also the root of the mathematical term "polynomial," meaning "many terms," though this usage came much later. She embodies the sea's endless variety.
