Euryalus
Son of Mecisteus who commanded part of the Argive contingent and won the boxing match at Patroclus's funeral games
The Legend of Euryalus
Euryalus was the son of Mecisteus and the grandson of Talaus. He co-commanded the Argive contingent from Argos alongside Diomedes and Sthenelus, bringing eighty ships to Troy. His father Mecisteus had won the boxing competition at the funeral games of Oedipus at Thebes, and Euryalus inherited his father's boxing skill. During the funeral games for Patroclus, Euryalus entered the boxing match against the mighty Epeius. Despite being a skilled fighter, Euryalus was badly beaten by Epeius, who knocked him down with a tremendous blow that sent him crashing to the ground. His companions had to carry him away with his feet dragging and his head lolling, spitting blood. He also participated in the Epigoni expedition against Thebes before the Trojan War.
