Epeius

The Legend of Epeius

He lost the boxing match at Patroclus's funeral games — but he built the weapon that won the entire war.‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍ Epeius was openly mocked as a coward and a poor fighter. Homer has him lose badly in the funeral games. But Athena chose him to build the wooden horse because his skill with tools surpassed his skill with weapons. He prayed to Athena before construction, and she guided his hands. The horse was his masterpiece — the most consequential single object ever built in Greek myth. The irony that the decisive weapon of the greatest war was made by the worst warrior embodies a truth the Greeks understood: techne (craft) can surpass bia (force).
