The Myth of Eione

Eione was numbered among Hesiod's Nereids, and her name derives from eion, meaning beach or strand.‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍ She personified the beach itself — that strip of sand or shingle where the sea spreads thin across the land before retreating. The beach was a liminal space in Greek thought, neither fully sea nor fully land, and Eione inhabited this threshold. Greek ships were beached rather than anchored in harbours (which came later), making the strand a crucial space for maritime activity. The famous beach scenes in Homer — the Greek camp at Troy, Achilles brooding by the sea — all take place in Eione's domain. She represents the sea at its most accessible and human-friendly.
