Islands, the sea between islands

The Myth of Neso

Neso was listed among Hesiod's Nereids, and like Nesaea, her name derives from nesos (island).‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍ Where Nesaea was "the island dweller," Neso was more simply "the island nymph." The Aegean Sea, with its vast scatter of islands, was the heartland of Nereid worship, and having two island-named Nereids in the catalogue reflects how central islands were to Greek maritime identity. Neso personified the sea as it related to islands — the channels between them, the winds that whistled through narrow straits, the currents that ran between island shores. For Greek sailors, navigating the island-studded Aegean was both a challenge and a delight, and Neso watched over those passages.
