Good gifts, generosity

Oceanid nymph whose name means good gifts and who represented the bounty of fresh water‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍

The Myth of Eudora

Eudora was a daughter of Oceanus and Tethys listed by Hesiod in his Theogony among the elder Oceanids.‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍ Her name combines eu (good) with doron (gift), marking her as a spirit of generous giving. Fresh water was arguably the most precious gift the natural world offered to ancient peoples, and the Oceanids who personified springs and streams were revered as benefactors of humanity. Eudora's name was shared by one of the Hyades — the star cluster whose rising heralded the rainy season — reinforcing her association with water as divine generosity. The name remained popular in the Greek-speaking world for centuries.
